On Saturday March 31, 2012, I had the privilege of attending “Hip Hop Show: Puttin’ da Meaning back in Hip Hop” at the Fruit of Labor Cultural Center in Raleigh, NC. The community came together to discuss issues facing our youth, communities, and the nation. There were some great poets and singers that performed. Cameron Aviles performed spoken word. Shayuansa Harris and NaTasha Thompson shared their powerful voices with songs. Angaza Samera was the MC for the event and Nathauette Mayo was one of our hosts. The crowd was also treated to a special guest appearance by Hip Hop/R&B artist Justice. He performed his singles “No” and “Flesh” as well as some spoken word. It was a great night for the community come together to celebrate our youth, the arts, and discuss issues affecting our communities.
